Taxonomic Standards
Information regarding taxonomic standardization and enrichment for OBIS Canada data sources.

OBIS Canada recognizes two taxonomic standards, ITIS and WoRMS and utilizes codes and tools developed by both organizations. For more information on ITIS, the Integrated Taxonomic Information System see http://www.itis.gov/ . For more information on WoRMS, the World register of Marine Species see http://marinespecies.org/
OBIS Canada supports the compilation of distribution information for taxa in our three oceans and promotes the development, use and maintenance of CaRMS, the Canadian Register of Marine Species http://marinespecies.org/carms/

As of April 11, 2007 there are sixteen (16) data sources being provided from OBIS Canada. Taxonomic Standardization and Enrichment was completed April 10, 2007 and will be updated to OBIS Portal in the near future.
The following table shows the number of taxonomic names provided by each data source and to assist in providing level of confidence their associated count by taxonomic levels. For example, ECNASAP contains 274 taxonomic names of which 269 where specied to the species and two (2) were provided only to genus.
The outstanding number is the number of provided taxonomic names that could not be automatically matched with names in the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). These names have been manually reviewed and possible options will soon be provided to data source owners for feedback.
